If you need help now

Draft, awaiting legal review. The final wording may change before launch.

If you are thinking about ending your life, or you are in danger, please talk to a person now. You do not have to go through this alone. Christina is an AI: she cannot call for help, and she cannot stay with you in an emergency.

In an emergency

If your life or someone else's is in immediate danger, call your local emergency number: 911 in the United States, Canada and Mexico, 112 anywhere in the European Union, and 999 or 112 in the United Kingdom.

Crisis lines

The people who answer are trained to help. You can call about yourself, or about someone you are worried about.

  • United States: call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or chat online. It is free, open day and night, and answers in English and Spanish.
  • Canada: call or text 988, the Suicide Crisis Helpline, day and night.
  • United Kingdom and Ireland: call Samaritans on 116 123, free, day or night.
  • Spain: call 024, the suicide prevention line. It is free, confidential, and open day and night.
  • Mexico: call Línea de la Vida on 800 911 2000, free, day and night.
  • Anywhere else: findahelpline.com lists free, confidential helplines in more than 175 countries.

What Christina does when you may be in danger

This is Christina's crisis protocol.

  • Before Christina replies, every message you send is checked for signs that you may be at risk of harming yourself.
  • If there are such signs, Christina sets coaching aside, responds with care, and asks you directly whether you are safe.
  • A card with the crisis lines for your country appears in the conversation. Christina cannot hide it or change it.
  • The session's time limit stops, so a conversation never ends because the time ran out.
  • Christina never gives information about ways to harm yourself, and never helps to plan it, however the question is put.
  • We keep a record that the card was shown, and when, but not your words, so that we can check that this protocol works.

If a reply from Christina felt wrong or unsafe, you can report it from that reply's menu. We read every report.

If you are worried about someone else

Stay with them if it is safe to do so, and call one of the lines above: they help friends and family too. If the person is in immediate danger, call your emergency number.
